Shawn Klein has posted a very good article about consumerism in education. His basic point is that students are paying for the access to education not unlike paying for a gym membership. Just because you pay for the membership to a gym doesn't mean you're guaranteed to become fit. Likewise, just because you pay for an education doesn't mean you're guaranteed to become educated. The student needs to take initiative to use the resources they're paying for.
